Number project to keep order when working with group.
Netflix is a prime example for their queue. This would be an immense help.

I'm interested how think this should be done. Do you want numbering internally inside a folder or should the numbering be global, giving each new project a unique number. What happens when the projects are rearranged? Do we update the numbers so that they are sorted?
And maybe the most important question. How do you intend to use this number? What will you be using it for?
If it were up to me I would number folders, sub-folder, and projects each within their designated space.
The master folders would have their numbers so if they are all collapsed you would see 1-10 or how ever many master folders there are.
Sub-folders would work in the same way within the master folder so you could open up master folder 1 and have sub-folder 1-10.
Projects would be ordered along with sub-folders in the same level or among other projects within the same level.
So to recap, the numbering would be dependent upon the level the folder/sub-folder/project (or item) is in.
Functionally, you can allow someone to enter the number into the text field and then click some button to update the order of the items, the item does not have to be immediately ordered by some Ajax, that would be unnecessary.
When projects are rearranged the number should update to the corresponding position, like in Netflix, you can drag and drop an item and the numbering changes correspondent to the position you just placed it on.
The intention for the numbers is order, this way the order will be clear to both your system and the user.
